Sandusky residents were treated to the annual Safety Fair and KidsFest Saturday, May 21st, 2011. The event was presented in collaboration by the Wightman / Wieber Safety Celebration Committee, the City of Sandusky Recreation Division, Sandusky City Schools, Maritime Museum of Sandusky, and the Sandusky Children's Museum.
The event ran from 12:00 noon until 5:00 PM, and was held at the following locations:
Sandusky Bay Pavilion, Maritime Museum, Meigs St. Pier at the Battery Park Marina, and Shoreline Park. The cost was only one canned good or non-perishable food item per person. The event included interactive inflatables, game and food vendors, face painting, caricatures, balloon animals, and much, much more; resulting in a day of wholesome family fun for all in attendance.
KidsFest included a number of photo ops including Streaky Bear, provided by Sandusky City schools, Truman the Dragon by Kidsville Magazine, Dollar Dog by VacationLand Federal Credit Union, Prince and Princess from the Sandusky State Theater, Wiley the Wolf provided by the Great Wolf Lodge, and Wendy provided by Wendy's Restaurant.
Additional events included: Kids Games with Dick Gallagher of the Sandusky Children's Museum, Period Games by the Erie County Civil War 150 Commission, Sand Art sponsored by the Patten / Lowery Family, Face Painting by the Sandusky City Schools Cheerleaders, Caricatures by Sean Carroll of Sandusky Bay Poster Works, Wicked Wacky Golf and Model Boat Building for Kids sponsored by the Maritime Museum of Sandusky, Downtown Scenic Hayride Tours sponsored by the Sandusky Exchange Club, and Balloon Animals by Mark and Stephanie Larrick of the Salvation Army.
Entertainment was provided in the form of a Ki San Do demonstration by Horn's Martial Arts School, a Youth Fitness session with Dwayne of the Sandusky YMCA, and Capt'n Willie sponsored by the Maritime Museum. There were also Parent Fundraisers for Osborne and Hancock Schools, Recycling Stations provided by Haag Environmental, and a Sandusky Speedway Race Car was available for viewing compliments of the Sandusky Speedway.
Members of the Sandusky Police and Fire Departments were available for meet and greet with the public and the Cleveland Browns Bus was present courtesy of the Schaefer Family. Shoreline Park hosted Kayak Safety Demonstrations.
The Meigs Street Pier at Battery Park Marina hosted Free Boat Rides on the Sawmill Express sponsored by the Maritime Museum, the Sandusky Fire Department Boat, and Pony Cart Rides sponsored by the Outlaws 4-H Club.
The Maritime Museum of Sandusky celebrated International Museum Day and May Day with a Nautical Flea Market and Erie County Historical Society Display in front of the museum, free admission to the museum, free Underground Railroad Trolley Tours, and "Coastie" the talking boat, courtesy of the Sandusky Power Squadron.
International Museum Day also granted area residents free admission to Eleutheros Cooke House and Garden, the Follet House Museum, Merry-Go-Round Museum, Thomas Edison's Birthplace, Milan Historical Museum, Ohio Veterans Home Museum, the City of Sandusky Community Greenhouse, and Osborn MetroPark / Erie MetroParks.
With so many activities, there was surely something for everyone and the events went off without a hitch providing Sandusky residents with a wonderful day of fun for all in attendance!
